What Is a Registered Apprenticeship Program?

A Registered Apprenticeship Program is a structured workforce training model formally registered with the U.S. Department of Labor. It combines on-the-job training - OJT - under a licensed journey-level professional with related technical instruction - RTI - that provides the knowledge foundation for that hands-on work.

Upon completion of all program requirements, apprentices receive a Certificate of Apprenticeship Completion issued by the program sponsor and recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor. This certificate is accepted by state licensing boards across the country as documentation of the experience required to sit for journeyman licensing examinations.

Home Hero Institute Inc. operates as a National Program Sponsor, meaning our registration covers all 50 states. Apprentices can complete OJT in any state through federal reciprocity without requiring a separate state registration.

Earn While You Learn

Apprentices are employed and paid by their employer partner throughout the program. Wages increase progressively as program milestones are completed. Entry-level apprentices earn a minimum of 50 percent of the local journeyman wage. Wages increase at each defined milestone up to 100 percent upon program completion.

No Tuition

The Home Hero Institute apprenticeship program charges no tuition. There are no program fees, enrollment fees, or completion fees associated with the DOL registered apprenticeship program itself. Apprentices earn wages while they train.

Trade Programs

Home Hero Institute currently accepts applications for the Plumbing program. Additional trade programs are in development and will open for enrollment as program standards are finalized and employer partners are established in each trade.

Program Structure

  1. Application: Submit an application through the admissions page. Applications are reviewed within three business days.
  2. Enrollment: Approved applicants are enrolled in the DOL apprenticeship program and receive access to the digital learning platform operated by Home Hero Management LLC.
  3. Common Core: All apprentices complete the Common Core curriculum before advancing to trade-specific training. The Common Core covers safety, tools, construction math, blueprint reading, and professional standards. It includes 36 hours of RTI and 160 hours of OJT.
  4. Employer Matching: Apprentices are matched with a licensed master contractor employer partner in their trade and geographic area. The employer provides supervised on-the-job training and verifies OJT hours through the platform.
  5. Trade-Specific Training: Apprentices advance through trade-specific work processes completing both RTI through the digital platform and OJT hours under their employer partner. Advancement is competency-based - apprentices demonstrate skills before advancing.
  6. Documentation: OJT hours are verified by the supervising employer and recorded in a DOL-compliant record maintained by the platform. Progress reports are generated automatically at defined milestones.
  7. Completion: Apprentices who satisfy all RTI hours, OJT hours, and competency requirements receive a Certificate of Apprenticeship Completion from Home Hero Institute Inc. recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor.

About Home Hero Institute Inc.

Home Hero Institute Inc. is a nonprofit Community Development Corporation incorporated in the State of Louisiana and headquartered in Shreveport. We were founded by Dewayne Anderson, a United States Army veteran, to address the gap between trade education and journeyman licensure that leaves thousands of skilled workers without the documentation they need to advance their careers.

We operate as a National Registered Apprenticeship Program sponsor under the authority of the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship. Our program is governed by a Board of Directors and administered in accordance with DOL apprenticeship regulations and our National Program Standards.

Our digital curriculum and OJT tracking platform is operated by Home Hero Management LLC under a service agreement with the Institute.
